Clark County Land Bank acquired 1615 Woodard Ave. in 2016, and not long after 1609 Woodward Ave. in 2017, as a part of the Neighborhood Impact Program (NIP) for demolition. The neighboring sites transformed from abandoned and blighted structures into a green space ready for community development.
Dr. Karlos L. Marshall and Moses B. Mbeseha, founders of Conscious Connect, acquired the green sites from the Clark County Land Bank in May of 2018 and transformed the space into an amazing park for the neighborhood. The park includes half-court basketball, disc golf, picnic tables, and more. Conscious Connect partnered with Project Jericho to implement creative placemaking and bring art and light to this park. Clark County Land Bank is proud to have been a stepping stone in the path to getting this project completed.
The dedication of this park also included the introduction of a Ohio Historical Land Marker in memory of Sully Jaymes, a Springfield lawyer and rights activist. An article from the Springfield News Sun included this excerpt about Jaymes:
Jaymes, who was born March 30 between 1875 and 1880, and who died in 1950, opened his practice in Springfield in 1903 and “provided free legal services to the Black community during a time of profound racial tension,” according to the Clark County Heritage Center. “He was one of Springfield’s most tireless activists for equal rights.”
